Non-caloric artificial sweeteners (NAS) consumption could induce glucose intolerance?

As may be opposed to the common believe, the use of sweeteners may cause diabetes. The reason lies in the fact that using NAS changes the natural microbiome (our microbial ecosystem). In a study done on mice that were supplemented with NAS for 11 weeks, a glucose intolerance was observed together with a change in the gut microbiome. When transplanting the gut microbiome from these mice into non-treated mice, they too, developed glucose intolerance.

At 2008, the NIH Common Fund Human Microbiome Project (HMP) was established, with the mission of generating resources that would enable the comprehensive characterization of the human microbiome and analysis of its role in human health and disease.
