New treatments for ADHD kids?
Two companies seek FDA approval for computer games to treat ADHD.
Akili, developed an adventure game that require the player to face challenges and avoid destructions. The challenges increase as the player progresses in the game. They believe, that when the game is played for long periods of time, it actually reconditions how the brain processes information. Initial clinical trials, suggest safety and high tolerance for the game, and clinical trials that show effectiveness should be the next step.
Posit Science on the other hand developed a computerized training program that was tested on ADHD kids vs. “placebo” program. Despite the fact that most kids didn’t finish the trial, Posit claim there are signs of improvement in some behavioral indexes.
